陷入寫作瓶頸的小說家查爾斯·康多曼，讓妻子露絲著手準備晚宴。他們邀請靈媒阿卡蒂夫人及好友布萊德曼夫婦，並想藉由降靈會以汲取靈感。然而陰錯陽差下竟召來了查爾斯的前任亡妻—艾薇拉。
The novelist, Charles Condomine, who faces obstacles in writing, asks his wife—Ruth, to arrange a dinner party. They invite the psychic—Madame Arcati and their old friends—the Bradmans for drawing inspiration from séance. By coincidence, the psychic calls in the ghost of Charles’s first wife—Elvira.

The advent of ghost causes an uproar in the Condomine family. The coquettish Elvira determines to use means to win Charles over, even involves the innocent servant—Edith. While the two wives quarrel from jealousy, Charles also has his own plan…How can Madame Arcati, who has been entrusted again, settle the mess of the relationship?
