Dear faculty, students and guests of the English Department,

Ever since the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020, students’ activities have been greatly affected. The graduation performances and exhibits, which especially require teamwork, have been unfortunately forced to a stop to prevent cluster infection. I am glad that the English Department has made some breakthrough after a long period of preparation and is now going to present Blithe Spirit by Sir Noel Coward, a contemporary British playwright. Under a popular theme and with witty dialogues, the play reflects his theatric success by arousing a mixture of fears and delightful feelings among the audience while entertaining not only the English-speaking countries but also the rest of the world in the sarcastic criticism on marriage and human nature, a typical British comedy for us to enjoy for a relief.

The graduation plays presented by Wenzao’s language departments have been one of our most treasured traditions, which, I believe, will not be terminated by the pandemic, but will evoke the genius of creativity and continue to sharpen the 5 Cs in our students throughout the process. In other words, Wenzaorians need to exercise their critical thinking when they read the original script and adapt it to proper interpretation, to collaborate in different teams for the production on and off the stage, to be creative in their design of the stage and costume, to communicate an important theme in a foreign language, and to manage thoroughly with IT competencies. Empowered by these capabilities, students are fulfilling a career dream of fruitful achievements.

I wish great success to the performance and a brilliant future to every one of you.

With love,

Margaret Mei-hua Chen, Ed.D.

President
