It is very uplifting and comforting that the 2022 graduating class of the 5-Y Junior College of English Department has decided to reproduce a comedy, Blithe Spirit, in the form of a radio drama, as the 52nd Graduation Play.

The original comedy was written by an English playwright, Noel Coward, whose plays were praised in Time Magazine for displaying “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise.”. To select and adapt a comedy of a talented playwright is particularly uplifting and comforting as it is connected to a bigger context, the Covid-19 pandemic. It has been the tradition for each 5-Y Junior College graduating class to produce a graduation play, and this is the fourth year in succession that a comedy has been chosen. With this theatrical production, the 2022 graduating class aims to bring the audience laughter and enjoyment, which serves as a placebo, to soothe people living in the worries caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. It is very unfortunate that the audience this year could not gather in the auditorium to watch the play as a result of the CDC regulation of Grade 2 of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, thanks to the play supervisors, Dr. I-Chen Huang and Dr. George Hsieh, the 52nd Graduation Play is made possible as it is performed through the voice of the cast. In other words, the cast for the play act out their respective roles via their vocal expressions. For that, let’s listen to the play Blithe Spirit!
